LNER London & North Eastern Railway Steam Locomotive 2172 at Peterborough in 1935
Seen at Peterborough in March 1935, Z Class 4-4-2 No 2172 was responsible for one of the most remarkable passenger haulage feats of World War 1 when it hauled a 700 ton train from Darlington to York (23 carriages) in 59 minutes (44.1 miles). At the time of this photograph, No 2172 was obviously well cared for in LNER apple green livery though it was to become an early class casualty when withdrawn from service in late 1944. The tender is a self-trimming example donated by Q6 class 0-8-0 No 2218 and the lined front bufferbeam end is indicative of Darlington Works paintshop practice. The tender visible to the right of this photograph belongs to P1 2-8-2 No 2393.
