Neville Stead was born in HuIl in 1937 and after passing his 11+ entered Hymers College, Hull. A railway enthusiast from an early age, he did his National Service about 1957 and was sent to Germany where he spent a lot of his time going round German loco sheds. Neville was also a good photographer, but his interest waxed and waned over his younger years. In the Mid 1960s Neville moved up to Whitley Bay and from around 1976 he became devoted to his railway negative collection. Starting with producing high quality prints for outlets throughout the North East his collection grew as he acquired negatives from various sources. The goal was to achieve a collection that was seen as a snapshot of the railway in Britain over the steam era. If a better image came in then it replaced the inferior one. Neville was adding to his collection up until his death. This collection is now safely with the Transport Treasury archive.
