LNER London & North Eastern Railway Steam Locomotive Class A3 2595 Trigo at Grantham in 1930s
The 1930s ‘Flying Scotsman’ was a heavy train of 550 tons which ran to an exacting schedule, especially for the last leg from Grantham to Kings Cross -the 105 miles being covered in 105 minutes. Here, this famous train stands at Grantham set ready to go, with A3 No 2595 ‘Trigo’ of Gateshead shed in charge. The time is 3.33pm. No 2595 had taken over from a Haymarket pacific at Newcastle and was booked to run right through to London. Built in February 1930, this engine was allocated to Tyneside sheds throughout its career -mostly at Gateshead. The photographer has made an excellent job of highlighting the tender lettering which was applied at Doncaster Works by means of coloured transfers.
