BR British Railways Steam Locomotive Class L 31779 at Brighton in 1952
In May 1952, ex-SECR ‘L’ Class 4-4-0 No 31779 arrives at Brighton shed for servicing after bringing in a train from Ramsgate. It is still carrying SR ‘Sunshine’ livery which it had received in the 1940s but would lose in favour of BR lined black at its next overhaul. Built by Borsig of Berlin in 1914 (one of 10 locomotives purchased from the German builder just before the outbreak of WW1), No 31779 survived until withdrawnn (still at Ramsgate) in June 1959. Creeping into this busy shed scene at left and right are K class 2-6-0 No 32345 and ‘Schools’ 4-4-0 No 30909 ‘St Pauls’.
