BR British Railways Steam Locomotive Coronation Class 46223 Princess Alice at Greskine, Beattock in 1960
A massive 15 coach load climbs Beattock near Greskine behind No 46223 ‘Princess Alice’ on a fine summer morning in 1960. It is the 12.20am Euston-Glasgow sleeping car service to which extra coaches will have been added at Carlisle, including a resaurant car (10th vehicle) to provide breakfast. At the rear of this ensemble, an LMS 2-6-4 tank gives assistance. An almost identical photograph can be seen in the book ‘The Best of Eric Treacy’ (p.108) with the same engine and train but the fireman can be seen at the cab window. It looks as if Treacy went to the same spot, probably on consecutive days to obtain these photographs.
