BR British Railways Steam Locomotive Class J6 64247 at Boston (Calder) in 1956
The 9.39am Boston-Peterborough local service is seen south of Boston in May 1956 heading towards Spalding. The train is approaching Calder’s timber yard which had a private siding off the down main. The bowler hatted traveller on the footplate is Inspector Basil Cummings of Lincoln who was having a ride for old times sake. This was because the new summer timetable was about to commence and all local services such as this were to be taken over by diesel multiple units. The beautiful manor house in the left background is the London Road Hospital an attractive feature of this lovely photograph along with the primroses in the trackside verge.
The line to Spalding finally closed in 1970 and the trackbed now forms part of the A16 highway.
