SR Southern Railway Steam Locomotive Class K10 140 at Eastleigh in 1935
Known to LSWR enginemen as ‘small hoppers’, the forty members of Class K10 were built at Nine Elms works in 1901/2. They were mixed traffic engines which worked all over the LSWR, with 5’7” driving wheels. Most were fitted with the stylish Drummond chimney but ten, including No 140 seen here at Eastleigh in March 1935 were sent to work on the Eastern section to replace redundant M3s (-being ousted in their turn by F1s.) The transferred ten had their chimneys replaced with stovepipes which they retained for the rest of their careers. No 140 survived to enter BR service but was withdrawn in 1950 without being renumbered 30140.
