LNER London & North Eastern Railway Steam Locomotive Class Sir Nigel Gresley at London in 1930s
Sir Nigel Gresley steps out. This is thought to be a press photograph taken of Sir Nigel accompanied by family members, obviously on their way to some special event -the opera? The photograph does not appear in the book ‘Sir Nigel Gresley; The Engineer and his Family’ by Geoffrey Hughes, so no further information is available. Sir Nigel died in April 1941 aged 65 and this picture would appear to have been taken in the 1930s, probably after his Knighthood in 1936. His wife Ethel died in 1929 so she is not one of the ladies in this group. Sir Nigel had two daughters, Violet (b. 1904) and Marjorie (b 1909) and the lady on his left in this photograph may be one of these.
