SR Southern Railway Steam Locomotive Class D1 2356 at Bognor Regis in 1937
D1 0-4-2T No 2356 is seen at Bognor Regis shed in 1937. 125 of these engines were built between 1873 and 1887, this one being released to traffic in 1886 as No 356 ‘Coulsden’, complete with Stroudley copper capped chimney. Unfortunately, this was later replaced with the Marsh type chimney shown here. Renumbered by the Southern Railway, it was withdrawn in 1940. These tank engines had been originally built to replace the ‘Terriers’ on London suburban traffic which was becoming too heavy for the Terriers to cope adequately.
