GWR Great Western Railway Steam Locomotive Class George the Fifth 2177 at Unknown in 1922c
Ex-LNWR ‘George the Fifth’ Class No 2177 ‘Malta’ is seen in original LNWR condition at an unknown location, probably in the 1920s. It was renumbered 5358 in October 1927 so this photograph was taken before then. These fine engines were superheated versions of the older ‘Precursor’ Class 4-4-0s. They were built with round topped boilers, but many were later reboilered with belpaire fireboxes and ross pop safety valves. Built in July 1911 it was withdrawn in November 1936 having had its nameplates removed in September 1936, possibly to avoid confusion with Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No 5616 ‘Malta GC’, built in 1934.
