LMS London Midland & Scottish Railway Steam Locomotive Class Jubilee 5554 Ontario at Rugby Midland in 280837
‘Jubilee’ No 5554 released from Crewe as a new build on 5th June 1934 was named ‘Ontario’ on 11th March 1936. Allocated first to Preston and then Bushbury, it became a Rugby resident on 19th January 1935 and remained there until July 1939 when it moved to Camden. Here it is seen at Rugby station on 28th August 1937, having arrived from the shed to take up a passenger working. The lamps on the bufferbeam have yet to be set correctly but the 4-6-0 has generated a head of steam and is blowing off furiously. In later years under BR ownership it had lengthy spells at Nottingham, Edge Hill and Crewe before withdrawal in November 1964, having covered a mileage of almost 1.28 million to the end of 1960. The overall roof of Rugby station remained in situ, becoming gradually more and more unsafe. It was demolished in 2001.
